AFTERNOON SURPRISE

I live in the Pelican State but oddly enough, I rarely have the pleasure of seeing a pelican. On my way home from work today, I was surprised to see a flock of pelicans on the lake. I didn't have a camera with me, but since this is the first sunny day we have seen in a week and it is supposed to be cloudy again tomorrow, I hurried home and grabbed the camera and managed to take a few pictures. They were too far out for me to get a good shot, but I didn't let that stop me.

Most shots were like this one... with their back to me! I also took a few other pictures of the lake while I was out there. Even though it is winter and very little green is showing, nature is still beautiful.  I love the color of the grass and trees against the water and the blue of the sky.

I caught a pair of Mallard's gliding along the bank. Again, I love the dried grasses.

I saw this egret on the way home and took a picture out the car window......can't figure out what happened to his eye! I think he must have closed it at the time I snapped the picture.  Such a graceful bird. We see these all around the house all year long.

I wish there had been more time to enjoy the sunshine! We expecting more winter weather for the rest of the week. Will it ever be spring????

Living in NE Missouri we rarely see Pelicans. Once or twice we've been delighted to see them, while watching Eagles in January, on the Mississippie River (it's very near our home). The Mississippi is the flyway for many migrating birds.
